“ The only winter flower garden in southern Thailand, with a northern-style atmosphere, mist effects, diverse blooms, plus accommodation and dining onsite. ”
The Winter Flower Garden Betong, located in Piyamit Village 2, was once a former base of the Malayan Communist Party. It has since been transformed under the royal initiative of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn into a sustainable agro-tourism destination. The project aims to create alternative livelihoods for the local community, reduce reliance on monoculture farming, and turn a historical site into a meaningful tourist attraction.
Despite being in southern Thailand, winter flowers can thrive here thanks to systematic environmental management. At an elevation of around 800 meters, the area naturally has cooler temperatures. This is enhanced by greenhouse systems that control light, temperature, and humidity, as well as mist systems that reduce heat and simulate a cool-climate atmosphere. Efficient water management ensures sustainability. The garden features flowers such as chrysanthemums, lilies, roses, and hydrangeas, all of which require specific growing conditions.
The garden is designed as an “experiential landscape” rather than a simple plantation. It includes outdoor flower plots that change with the seasons, climate-controlled greenhouses for delicate species, and a wooden walkway that serves as a popular photo spot. Visitors can also enjoy scenic viewpoints overlooking mountains and morning mist, as well as a tram service that makes the garden accessible for families and elderly visitors.
