“It is a beautiful viewpoint, especially in the morning and evening. There are cycling and jogging paths along the reservoir, and long-tail boats can be rented to explore the beauty of the reservoir, including the waterfall at the headwaters.”
The Lam Phra Phloeng Reservoir is a major irrigation project constructed in 1962, forming a crucial part of water resource development in the northeastern region of Thailand. Its primary purpose is to retain water sourced from the Pang Haeo and Phaeng Ma mountain ranges for consumption, general use, and agriculture, particularly serving the Pak Thong Chai district and surrounding areas. The dam itself is an earth-fill dam with a crest length of approximately 150 meters and a height_ of about 39 meters from the streambed, creating a large reservoir with a maximum capacity exceeding 150 million cubic meters.
Geographical Features and Scenery: The reservoir boasts exceptionally beautiful scenery, as it is embraced by mountain ranges and forests belonging to the Thap Lan National Park, which is part of the Dong Phaya Yen–Khao Yai Forest Complex. This setting provides fresh air and a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains, especially Phaeng Ma Mountain, a known habitat for wild gaurs. The area above the dam is thus highly popular for enjoying the mountainous, lake-like landscapes.
Tourism and Activities: The area surrounding the dam has been developed into a recreational destination with several engaging activities. These include cycling and jogging along the dam's crest road and the roads circling the reservoir that stretch along the waterfront; long-tail boat trips to admire the scenery and nature within the reservoir, with trips often reaching the headwaters and waterfalls formed by streams flowing into the reservoir during the rainy season; fishing (in compliance with the Royal Irrigation Department's regulations); and camping sites and private resorts located along the reservoir for tourists wishing to stay overnight to experience the tranquil evening and morning atmosphere.
Economic and Historical Significance: Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, the Lam Phra Phloeng Dam is vital for sustaining the agricultural sector, particularly the rice fields and economic crops of Pak Thong Chai district. It also plays a key role in regulating water levels and preventing floods in the Lam Phra Phloeng river basin.
