“The most scenic bridge featuring stunning Laotian limestone mountain backdrops. Connecting Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, this landmark’s twin-pillar design offers iconic photography spots for every traveler.”

Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge 3, located between at Samat Subdistrict, Nakhon Phanom, serves as a vital international gateway linking Ban Hom in Thailand with Ban Veun Tai in Thakhek, Khammouane Province, Lao PDR. The project originated from intergovernmental negotiations aimed at expanding the Mekong River region's transportation network under the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) economic cooperation framework. Funded entirely by the Thai government with a budget of approximately 1.723 billion Baht, construction commenced on May 26, 2009. The foundation stone was laid by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Mr. Bounnhang Vorachith, then Vice President of Lao PDR. The bridge officially opened on the auspicious date of November 11, 2011 (11/11/11).

In terms of engineering and architecture, the bridge spans a total length of 1,423 meters and a width_ of 13 meters, featuring two traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides. The structure is distinguished by its elegant and modern twin-pillar design. However, what earns this bridge the reputation as the most beautiful among all Thai-Lao bridges is its breathtaking geographical setting. Positioned directly across from the complex limestone mountain ranges of Thakhek, the bridge offers travelers a panoramic view of lush green cliffs contrasting with the vast Mekong River. On clear days, the scenery resembles a natural masterpiece, and during the winter months, a light sea of mist often blankets the mountain peaks, adding a mystical charm to the surrounding atmosphere.

Beyond its significance as a major tourist landmark, the Third Friendship Bridge functions as a key component of the strategic Route R12 (Nakhon Phanom-Thakhek-Vinh-Hanoi). This route represents the shortest land connection from Thailand to Quang Binh and Danang Port in Vietnam, and further into Guangxi Province in Southern China. Consequently, the bridge has become a crucial hub for the cross-border transportation of agricultural and industrial goods. On the Thai side, the bridge’s vicinity features multi-purpose activity plazas, public parks, and a scenic riverside cycling track that connects to the Naga Landmark (Phaya Sri Sattanakarat) in the city center. This transformation has turned the bridge area into a vibrant social hub for recreation, outdoor exercises, and sightseeing for both locals and international visitors.
