“A world-renowned peace education center preserving real artifacts and testimonies from the atomic bombing of 1945.”
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is one of the most significant peace museums in the world, dedicated to preserving the memory of the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. The museum presents the historical context of the bombing, the devastating human impact, and the city's recovery through deeply moving exhibits.
The museum consists of two main sections:
- East Building, which explains the events leading to the bombing, wartime decisions, and Hiroshima’s reconstruction; and
- Main Building, which houses powerful displays including personal belongings of victims, melted structures, burned clothing, and a clock frozen at 8:15—the exact moment the bomb detonated.
Visitors can also listen to testimonies from survivors (hibakusha), view before-and-after city models, and engage with educational materials promoting global peace. Located within Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the museum is connected to important memorials such as the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, and the Flame of Peace.
With audio guides available in multiple languages and carefully curated exhibitions, the museum offers an essential and emotional learning experience for visitors from all over the world.
How to Get There
- From Hiroshima Station, take the Hiroshima Electric Railway (Hiroden) tram lines 2 or 6 to Genbaku Dome-mae Station, then walk for 10 minutes through Peace Memorial Park. Bus and taxi services also provide direct access to the museum area.
