“Rock formations and pools naturally eroded over thousands of years, breathtaking sunrise views, and a tranquil atmosphere perfect for relaxation and photography.”
Hat Chom Dao, located in Khong Chiam District of Ubon Ratchathani Province, is a large rocky terrace in the Mekong River that emerges during the dry season (around November to April). The name “Hat Chom Dao” means “Star Viewing Beach,” referring to the wide open space and clear night sky, ideal for stargazing. It also offers beautiful panoramic scenery during the daytime.
Often called the “Little Sam Phan Bok,” this site features rock formations and natural pools similar to those of the famous Sam Phan Bok in Pho Sai District but on a smaller scale. The area’s charm lies in the unique patterns and shapes formed by the river’s erosion over thousands of years. Some pools retain water year-round, while others shine in emerald hues when hit by sunlight.
Geological studies show that the sandstone here is millions of years old and part of the Khorat Group sedimentary rock formation found across Northeastern Thailand. Continuous erosion by the Mekong’s currents and sand particles carved the rocks into various shapes—some resembling hearts, animals, or other imaginative forms.
During the rainy season, Hat Chom Dao is submerged under the Mekong’s rising waters, making the dry season the best time to visit. Apart from walking across the rock terrace, visitors can take long-tail boat rides to explore the river and rock formations up close.
The area offers a calm and quiet atmosphere, accompanied only by the sound of flowing water and gentle breezes. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunrise, where the day’s first light reflects on the water and rocks, creating a mesmerizing view.
Local communities around Hat Chom Dao still follow traditional Mekong River lifestyles, such as fishing and seasonal farming. Visitors can enjoy local hospitality and taste regional delicacies like grilled Mekong fish, spicy fermented fish dip (jaew bong), and sour Mekong fish soup.
With its natural beauty and geological significance, Hat Chom Dao is a must-visit destination in Ubon Ratchathani.
