“Management and promotion of coastal ecosystem learning through a mangrove nature trail leading to the Black Sand Beach, aimed at fostering sustainable environmental conservation awareness.”
The Marine and Coastal Resources Learning Center 1 is a primary agency operating under the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. Its core mission involves the management, conservation, and restoration of marine and coastal resources within its jurisdiction. The center focuses on disseminating knowledge and cultivating environmental ethics among the youth and the general public. This site has been developed into a "Living Learning Center" by preserving a highly biodiverse mangrove ecosystem. It consists of various essential mangrove flora, such as Rhizophora mucronata (Loop-root mangrove), Rhizophora apiculata, and Avicennia, which serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion and act as vital nurseries for juvenile aquatic life in the Trat Sea.
The most distinctive identity within the center’s area of responsibility is the Black Sand Beach Geological Phenomenon, which is considered an extremely rare natural resource of global importance, with only five such locations discovered worldwide. The formation of black sand in this area results from the long-term accumulation and decomposition of specific plant and animal remains, combined with unique natural minerals, resulting in a jet-black sand with a highly fine texture. The center has established a nature study route featuring a wooden boardwalk winding through the lush mangrove forest, allowing tourists and interested individuals to experience this wonder up close without impacting the original environment. Systematic academic interpretive signs are placed along the path to explain the relationships between living organisms and the functional mechanisms of the coastal ecosystem.
Beyond serving as an eco-tourism destination, the Marine and Coastal Resources Learning Center 1 plays a crucial role in conducting research and monitoring changes in the coastal environment. It also promotes activities that encourage local community participation in safeguarding natural resources. Within the center's facilities, permanent exhibitions are displayed, providing scientific details regarding the characteristics of the black sand, geological properties related to traditional natural foot spas, and a collection of flora and fauna specimens found in the mangroves. This ensures that visitors receive accurate academic knowledge alongside appreciating the tranquil and pristine beauty of nature.
A visit to this center is more than just a leisure trip; it is an opportunity to learn about the vital connections between terrestrial and marine resources that impact livelihoods and sustainable development. The mission of the Marine and Coastal Resources Learning Center 1 is therefore a key mechanism in maintaining the abundance of the "Black Sand Beach" and this mangrove forest as an invaluable natural heritage of Trat Province and the world. The area is managed with strict organization and consideration for its carrying capacity to prevent degradation caused by human utilization.
