“A 400-year-old shrunken scenic garden symbolizing beauty, resilience, and Japan’s cultural heritage.”

Shukkei-en Garden, which translates to “shrunken scenic garden,” was created in 1620 by Hiroshima Castle’s feudal lord, Asano Nagaakira, during the Edo period. Designed by the distinguished tea master Ueda Sōko, the garden was influenced by the serene landscapes of China’s West Lake. Its layout ingeniously condenses majestic natural scenery—mountains, valleys, rivers, and islands—into a single, walkable landscape.

At the heart of the garden lies Takueichi Pond, surrounded by 14 small islands that replicate the geography of the Seto Inland Sea. The iconic arched Koko-kyo (Drum Bridge) stands as one of the rare surviving structures from the 1945 bombing. A circular walking path leads through bamboo groves, miniature hills, elegant teahouses, and seasonal viewpoints that reveal new perspectives throughout the year.

Shukkei-en also carries deep historical weight. Situated only 1.3 km from the atomic bomb hypocenter, it was heavily damaged on August 6, 1945. The garden served as a refuge for thousands of survivors and a temporary burial ground in the immediate aftermath. Today, a cenotaph within the grounds honors those who sought shelter here. Restoration began in 1949 and continued over decades, culminating in the garden’s reopening as a powerful symbol of Hiroshima’s recovery and resilience.

Now officially designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, Shukkei-en continues to attract nature lovers and photographers for its cherry blossoms, lush summer greenery, vibrant autumn colors, and winter camellias.
