“Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a late Ayutthaya-era temple home to the Shrine of Mae Nak, a legendary symbol of immortal love and a sacred site for those seeking blessings in romance and military exemption.”

Mahabut Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located along Phra Khanong Canal in Bangkok. Built during the late Ayutthaya period around 1762, the temple serves not only as a religious center for the local community but also as a living cultural landmark deeply rooted in Thai folklore.

The Timeless Legend

Wat Mahabut is widely known as the home of the shrine of Mae Nak Phra Khanong, one of Thailand’s most famous legendary figures. The story of Mae Nak’s unwavering love and devotion to her husband has become an enduring symbol of loyalty and romance in Thai culture. The legend has inspired numerous books, television dramas, and films across generations.

Faith and Devotion

The Mae Nak Shrine continuously welcomes visitors who come to pray and make wishes. Popular requests include:

  • Blessings for love and relationships

  • Prayers for having children

  • Appeals regarding military conscription

Those whose wishes are fulfilled often return with traditional Thai costumes, children’s toys, or floral offerings as acts of gratitude. Within the temple grounds, visitors can also admire sacred Buddha images and traditional architectural structures that reflect classic Thai Buddhist artistry.

Canal-Side Atmosphere

Situated beside Phra Khanong Canal, the temple offers a peaceful riverside ambiance. Visitors may feed fish at the pier and observe glimpses of traditional canal-side living—an increasingly rare sight in modern Bangkok. The scent of incense and the sound of chanting create an atmosphere that blends serenity with spiritual mystique.

A Source of Artistic Inspiration

Mahabut Temple attracts photographers and artists drawn to its harmonious blend of ancient architecture and living faith. The wooden structures, intricate Thai motifs, and devotional activities provide rich visual storytelling opportunities. It is a destination where spiritual practice and cultural exploration come together seamlessly.

We warmly invite you to experience this timeless legend of love and receive blessings at Wat Mahabut—an enduring sanctuary of faith along the historic Phra Khanong Canal.
