“Marvel at the bell-shaped pagoda surrounded by 36 stucco lions and pay respects to the serene Luang Phor Khao inside an ancient viharn with a gateway so mystical it's nicknamed the "Time Portal of Ayutthaya."”

Mae Nang Pluem Temple is an ancient temple filled with spiritual charm, located north of Ayutthaya Island. It is believed to have been established around 1920 BE during the early Ayutthaya period. Beyond its architectural value, the temple is especially renowned for its legends and beliefs that have been passed down for centuries.

The significance of Mae Nang Pluem Temple is closely connected to a legend from the reign of King Naresuan the Great. According to local accounts, the king once sought shelter from a heavy storm and received kindness from an elderly woman named “Mae Nang Pluem,” who lived a humble life but possessed great generosity. In gratitude for her compassion, the king ordered the restoration of the temple, transforming it into a lasting symbol of gratitude and the deep bond between the monarch and the people.

The temple’s most notable feature is the Viharn of Luang Pho Khao, which houses the revered Buddha image known as “Luang Pho Khao,” created in the early Ayutthaya artistic style. The Buddha image displays gentle features, a calm expression, and a sense of purity. The viharn is unique in having only a single entrance and no rear door, following the ancient belief known as “Maha Udom,” which is believed to protect against negative influences and enhance spiritual power.

Behind the viharn stands the main bell-shaped chedi, surrounded by 36 stucco lion figures. This structure reflects a harmonious blend of Khmer and Sukhothai artistic influences. Despite the passage of time, the chedi and lion sculptures still clearly demonstrate the refined craftsmanship of ancient artisans. Wat Mae Nang Pluem is also considered one of the most well-preserved temples, as during the second fall of Ayutthaya, Burmese forces used the area as a military camp, sparing the temple from destruction unlike many others within the island.

Today, Mae Nang Pluem Temple is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking inner peace. A popular photo spot is the entrance archway aligned directly with the viharn, creating a striking composition that reflects both past and present. Many visitors come to pay respects to Luang Pho Khao and Luang Pho Thanjai, believing in their sacred power to grant success and blessings. Mae Nang Pluem Temple remains a living place where history, legend, and faith continue to coexist in harmony.
