“Visit Mae Ngad Dam, stay in floating raft houses, see Mon Hin Lai Waterfall, go camping, and enjoy the sea of mist at Doi Mon Lan.”
Si Lanna National Park was declared a national park on August 25, 1981, making it the 23rd national park of Thailand. It covers an area of approximately 1,406 square kilometers (879,064 rai), encompassing Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, and Phrao Districts in Chiang Mai Province. It plays a crucial role in conserving the headwater forests of the Ping River Basin, which is a vital water source sustaining numerous agricultural areas and communities in the northern region.
The landscape features complex mountain ranges along the Phi Pan Nam mountain range, with elevations ranging from approximately 300–1,700 meters above sea level. This gives rise to diverse ecosystems, including hill evergreen forests, dry evergreen forests, mixed deciduous forests, and dry dipterocarp forests. Within the forest, important tree species such as teak, Burma padauk, ironwood, golden-haired ironwood, yang, and various kinds of oak can be found. It is also home to wildlife such as barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar, Asiatic black bear, civets, palm civets, monkeys, langurs, and various bird species like hornbills, scarlet minivets, and sunbirds, reflecting the area's rich ecological diversity.
The most important landmark of the park is the Mae Ngad Somboon Chon Dam Reservoir which was created by damming the Mae Ngad River for irrigation, hydropower generation, and consumption. It has now become a famous tourist attraction in Chiang Mai. Visitors can take a long-tail boat from the pier to the floating raft houses, which takes approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the raft's location. The raft houses offer accommodation, restaurants, cafes, activities like kayaking, water rafting, swimming, fishing, and scenic boat trips around the mountains surrounding the reservoir.
In addition to water-based tourism, the park also boasts other interesting natural attractions, including Mon Hin Lai Waterfall, a large 9-tiered limestone waterfall with year-round flow, ideal for nature walks and relaxation amidst the mountains. Those who enjoy cold weather and mist can travel to Doi Mon Lan, which stands at approximately 1,696 meters above sea level and is a famous sunrise viewing spot in Chiang Mai. During the cold season, temperatures can drop below 10 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for camping and stargazing at night.
The park also boasts high biodiversity, featuring numerous medicinal plants, wild orchids, ferns, wild mushrooms, and small animals. Therefore, nature trails and environmental activities are organized for students, academics, and tourists interested in learning about the ecosystem. Park rangers are also available to provide information and ensure safety throughout the visit.
Regarding facilities, the park is fully equipped with a visitor center, park accommodations, camping grounds, restrooms, convenience stores, restaurants, and parking lots. It caters to both day-trippers and those wishing to stay overnight for a closer experience with nature.
The ideal time to visit is from November–February, when the weather is cool and pleasant, suitable for camping and enjoying the sea of mist. From June–October is the rainy season, when nature is lush green, waterfalls have abundant water, and the reservoir offers beautiful scenery, perfect for boat trips and relaxing amidst nature.
