“Marvel at giant wind turbines on rolling green hills, ride scenic trams through morning mist, and enjoy thrilling traditional Hmong tribal activities.”
Khao Kho Wind Farm is located in Ban Phet Dam, Thung Samo Subdistrict, Khao Kho District, Phetchabun Province, at an altitude of approximately 1,050 meters above sea level. Originally developed as a private wind power project, it utilizes the wind potential that blows along the Khao Kho mountain range almost year-round. Later, numerous giant white wind turbines were installed along the mountain ridge, amidst a backdrop of rolling mountains and vast green meadows, making it one of the most famous tourist landmarks in Phetchabun Province and a key check-in point for tourists visiting Khao Kho.
The wind farm's distinctive feature is the perfect blend of "clean energy" and "natural landscape." Each wind turbine stands over 100 meters tall, prominently perched on the mountain ridge and visible from afar. The sight is especially beautiful and striking during the morning and evening when sunlight illuminates the white turbine towers. From above, a continuous stretch of mountains is visible, sometimes with sea of mist floating in the valleys. The most popular time to visit is during the late rainy season and early winter, between October and January, when the weather is cool and breezy throughout the day. The surrounding nature remains lush and beautiful.
Within the tourist area, a parking system is in place for visitors before they use a local tram to access the viewpoints inside. Because the area is a wide hillside with many viewpoints, the tram takes tourists past important photo spots, such as the large grassy hill popularly known as the Teletubbies Field because of its curved, green shape resembling a scene from the famous children's show. There are also walking paths down to take photos with the wind turbines up close, and a viewpoint offering a 360-degree view of Khao Kho. This makes it a popular location for nature photography, pre-wedding photos, and travel content for social media.
Another highlight of the wind turbine field is the seasonal tourism activities and mountain agricultural areas open to visitors. At certain times, there are plots of cold-climate flowers such as verbena and cosmos, and other colorful flowers planted along the hillsides. There are also strawberry farms and other cold-climate crops grown by local villagers. Tourists can buy fresh produce directly from the farmers, including strawberries, sweet corn, avocados, and various cold-climate vegetables, which helps generate income for the local community alongside tourism.
The area surrounding the wind turbine field is also filled with cafes, restaurants, and resort-style accommodations scattered along the hillsides. Many accommodations are designed to offer unobstructed views of the wind turbines and the mountain landscape, especially during the winter months when temperatures can drop and morning fog blanket the area. This makes overnight stays a popular choice for tourists seeking to fully experience Khao Kho's atmosphere. During long holidays or peak season, the area sees a large influx of visitors, so planning and booking accommodations in advance is advisable, particularly from November to January, considered Khao Kho's peak season.
Although the wind turbine field is a highly popular tourist attraction, much of the area retains its natural beauty, preserving the mountains and agricultural land. Tourists can therefore experience mountain views, cool weather, and the lifestyle of the highland community all in one place. The striking giant wind turbines standing majestically amidst the natural surroundings make Khao Kho one of the most iconic destinations in Khao Kho and continue to be popular with both Thai and international tourists.
