“Discover Le Corbusier’s only building in Japan and explore Rodin’s and Monet’s masterpieces in a world-class art museum within Ueno Park.”

The National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) stands as one of Japan’s most significant cultural institutions, uniting art, architecture, and history. Established in 1959, it was designed by the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret), representing his only architectural work in Japan. The museum embodies his principles of modernism—using pilotis (supporting columns), open floor plans, and natural light to create a flexible and growing “Museum of Unlimited Growth.”

In 2016, the museum earned its UNESCO World Heritage designation as part of “The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement.” Its inscription marked Tokyo as one of the few cities with a World Cultural Heritage site dedicated to modern architecture.

The museum’s heart lies in its Matsukata Collection, gathered by Japanese industrialist Kōjirō Matsukata (1866–1950). These works, once housed in France, were repatriated to Japan after World War II and became the cornerstone of the museum’s holdings. Today, visitors can explore over 6,000 artworks spanning from the late Medieval period to the 20th century, featuring paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints that trace the evolution of Western art.

Key attractions include Rodin’s monumental sculptures such as “The Thinker” and “The Gates of Hell” prominently displayed in the museum’s forecourt, providing striking photo opportunities. Inside, the galleries feature Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works by Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, and Gauguin, as well as Renaissance and Baroque paintings by masters like Peter Paul Rubens, offering a comprehensive panorama of European art.
