“A historic temple in the Hua Wiang district featuring a Chiang Saen–style principal Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture, surrounded by several ancient Chiang Saen bronze Buddha statues, and architecture influenced by Indian and Burmese styles.”

Wat Chetawan, also known locally as Wat Hua Wiang, is an important temple in the heart of Lampang city. It was established around 1874 (B.E. 2417) and belongs to the Dhammayuttika Nikaya sect of Thai Buddhism. The temple is located in the historic Hua Wiang district, once an important commercial and residential area of old Lampang. Despite being close to one of the city’s busiest roads, the temple maintains a calm, clean, and peaceful atmosphere.

Inside the ordination hall enshrines the principal Buddha image in the Chiang Saen artistic style, depicted in the Mara-Vijaya posture. The Buddha image features a graceful oval face and a flame-shaped ushnisha (topknot) resembling a rising flame, a distinctive characteristic of Chiang Saen Buddhist art from the ancient Lanna period.

At the base of the principal Buddha image are several smaller bronze Buddha statues from the Chiang Saen period. Scholars believe that some of these statues may be older than the principal image, as their hair is styled in curled hair buns rather than a flame-like finial, reflecting different artistic developments in Buddhist sculpture over time.

The architecture of the ordination hall and viharn also displays a unique blend of styles. The structures incorporate decorative and structural elements influenced by Indian and Burmese architecture, creating a distinctive appearance that differs from traditional Lanna temples.

Today, Wat Chetawan is also home to the Phalangjit Institute (Branch 22), with Hor Jinda Building serving as the center for meditation training and spiritual practice. The temple grounds are shaded by large trees and provide a tranquil environment for visitors who wish to pray, meditate, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of a historic temple in the middle of Lampang city.
