“Lom Phu Khiao is a stunning emerald-colored sinkhole pool formed by limestone collapse, featuring crystal-clear water filled with mahseer fish, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and forest, and home to the sacred Chao Pho Lom Phu Khiao shrine revered by local communities.”

Lom Phu Khiao is one of Lampang’s most remarkable natural attractions, located inside Tham Pha Thai National Park in Ngao District. This large natural pool lies quietly within a limestone valley and is famous for its striking emerald-blue water that reflects sunlight beautifully. Because of its unique appearance and untouched environment, it has become one of the Unseen Thailand destinations for nature lovers.

Geological Wonder

From a geological perspective, Lom Phu Khiao is a sinkhole, formed when underground water gradually dissolved the limestone layers beneath the surface until the cave ceiling collapsed. This process created a massive circular basin that eventually filled with water. The sinkhole is about 100 meters wide, and its depth is so great that the bottom cannot be clearly seen, giving the water its deep blue and emerald tones.

Rich Ecosystem

The water is exceptionally clear, allowing visitors to see submerged tree branches and large schools of mahseer fish swimming below the surface. The surrounding area is enclosed by tall limestone cliffs and dense forest, creating a cool and peaceful environment. The quiet natural atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for travelers seeking serenity and scenic photography.

Local Beliefs and Spiritual Significance

Beyond its natural beauty, Lom Phu Khiao also holds spiritual significance for local residents. According to local beliefs, the area is protected by sacred spirits and associated with the mythical Naga serpent. A small shrine known as Chao Pho Lom Phu Khiao Shrine has been built near the pool where visitors often pay respect and make offerings for good fortune and protection.

Conservation Rules

To preserve the purity of the water and protect the ecosystem, the national park strictly enforces several regulations. Swimming, fishing, and littering are strictly prohibited. These measures help maintain the pristine condition of Lom Phu Khiao so visitors can continue to enjoy its natural beauty.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Ngao District, drive along Highway 1154 (Ngao – Song route) for approximately 12 kilometers. Turn toward Ban On village and continue along a dirt road for about 14 kilometers. Some sections are narrow and steep, so a pickup truck or a vehicle with strong engine power is recommended.

Travel Tips
  • Between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, when sunlight reflects directly on the water, revealing the most vibrant emerald color.

  • Bring drinking water and snacks as there are no shops near the sinkhole.

  • Swimming is strictly prohibited because the water is extremely deep and the bottom contains dangerous soft mud.

  • Always take your trash back with you and help keep the area clean.
