“A 360-degree hilltop viewpoint offering chilly weather, spectacular sea of mist, and the most beautiful Thailand-Myanmar border sunsets over the vast, rolling Tanaosri mountain range.”

Noen Chang Suek is a famous viewpoint located in the E-Tong – Pilok Mine area, Pilok Subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province, along the Thai-Myanmar border. Situated on a high ridge of the Tenasserim Mountains, a significant mountain range in western Thailand, it lies approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. This results in cool temperatures almost year-round, especially during the rainy and winter seasons when thick fog blankets the area in the mornings, creating a large sea of fog above the complex mountain ranges. The open terrain of Noen Chang Suek offers panoramic views in all directions, encompassing both Thailand and Myanmar, making it considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Kanchanaburi Province.

Originally, this area was a Border Patrol Police base, known to tourists as "Chang Suek Base," strategically located on the Thai-Myanmar border. Currently, officers still guard the area, giving it a unique atmosphere compared to typical natural tourist destinations. Visitors can experience the tranquility of the border mountains while appreciating the historical significance of the border region. In the past, E-Tong and Pilok Mine were important tin mining areas in Thailand, attracting many people to work and settle in the area. A large community developed from the mining industry before its decline. Today, the area has transformed from a mining town into a nature and community-based tourism destination, with Chang Suek Hill being a must-visit for tourists seeking stunning views.

The main highlight of Chang Suek Hill is the opportunity to witness the sea of mist and the sunrise in the early morning. As the first rays of sunlight gradually appear over the mountain range, layers of mountains stretch as far as the eye can see, shrouded in white mist that blankets the valleys, creating a serene and beautiful atmosphere. During the winter, temperatures on the mountaintop can drop significantly, making it noticeably chilly. The evening is another popular time to watch the sunset over the mountains on the Myanmar side. The sky gradually changes color from light blue to orange, red, and purple, contrasting with the mountain shadows, creating a unique and striking landscape. Many tourists enjoy taking panoramic photos, as well as pictures of the sea of mist and mountain views during this time.

The journey to Chang Suek Hill is another charm of this place. Tourists must travel along a winding mountain road from Thong Pha Phum District to Ban E-Tong, a route famous for its "399 curves." Along the way, the landscape is lined with forests, mountains, and the natural beauty of the western forest region. Near E-Tong village, there's a turnoff leading to Chang Suek Hill. The final stretch is quite steep and narrow, with alternating sections of dirt and concrete. Inexperienced travelers often opt for local pickup trucks or shared taxis, driven by experienced mountain drivers, especially during the rainy season when roads can be slippery and fog can be thick on some days.

Besides scenic views, Chang Suek Hill is also a popular spot for camping and stargazing. Located away from the city and with minimal light pollution from large communities, the night sky is dark and the stars are clearly visible. The atmosphere is peaceful, with a constant breeze throughout the night, making it a popular choice for overnight stays to fully immerse oneself in nature. The best time to visit is during the late rainy season and early winter, when the weather is cool, the skies are clear, and there's a chance of seeing thick fog in the morning. However, amenities at the top are limited, so travelers should prepare warm clothing, essential equipment, and check the weather forecast before traveling.

How to Get There
  • From Kanchanaburi city, take Highway 323 to Thong Pha Phum district, then turn onto Highway 3272 toward Pilok Mine. Navigate the famous 399 curves; just before reaching Ban I-Tong, there is a left turn leading up to Noen Chang Suek. The final stretch is somewhat steep and rugged, so drive with caution.
