“A legacy of King Rama IX's benevolence, it is the first freshwater reservoir constructed by the sea in Thailand, featuring a striking Royal Pavilion and a paved path ideal for walking and cycling.”
Khao Tao Reservoir holds immense historical significance, marking the first Royal Initiative Project of the Royal Irrigation Department inspired by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (King Rama IX) in 1963 (B.E. 2506). The project was initiated to urgently address the severe shortage of fresh water for consumption and agriculture, and to prevent saltwater intrusion which plagued the Khao Tao community.
The construction of this reservoir on land humbly dedicated by the local people successfully transformed the barren local community into a fertile area. The project is not merely a source of fresh water but a symbol of the King's compassion and became the blueprint for subsequent water resource development projects across the country. The reservoir can hold over 600,000 cubic meters of water, sufficient to sustain the surrounding community.
Today, Khao Tao Reservoir has evolved into a beloved recreational area for both locals and tourists. The atmosphere is peaceful and shaded, with green mountains and trees surrounding the water's edge. The most prominent feature is the Royal Pavilion (Phlab Phla Klang Nam), a beautiful and graceful structure built out over the water, serving as a picturesque viewpoint and photo opportunity. At night, the pavilion is illuminated with colorful lights.
A well-maintained track for walking, running, and cycling encircles the reservoir, making it extremely popular among fitness enthusiasts who enjoy exercising in this beautiful natural setting. Additionally, several charming cafes and restaurants line the reservoir, offering perfect spots for enjoying a beverage and the tranquil lakeside views.
A visit to Khao Tao Reservoir is a journey that seamlessly blends learning about Thailand's valuable history with relaxing in a natural setting that has retained its beauty and calm. It is a worthwhile destination for those seeking tranquility and magnificent scenic views near Hua Hin.
