“A flooded seaside temple surrounded by the sea during high tide, still actively used for worship with Luang Pho To inside, set in a quiet fishing village with no road access.”

Wat Khun Samut Chin is located in Laem Fa Pha Subdistrict, Phra Samut Chedi District, Samut Prakan Province, at the tip of a coastal peninsula along the Gulf of Thailand. The area has been severely affected by coastal erosion over time. The region was once a mainland community, but continuous wave action and sea currents have gradually eroded the coastline, causing the shoreline to retreat several kilometers inland. Many houses were relocated, leaving only part of the community and the temple remaining. The temple has become a symbolic landmark of the area. During high tide, the ordination hall appears to stand in the middle of the sea, surrounded by water on all sides, while during low tide, land emerges and visitors can walk around the temple.

The ordination hall has been renovated by raising its floor level to protect it from flooding, while still remaining fully functional for religious ceremonies. Inside are important Buddha images such as Luang Pho To and Luang Pho Pak Daeng, which are highly revered by local residents. The surrounding Ban Khun Samut Chin community is a fishing village with no road access. Transportation relies entirely on boats, and local life is closely tied to tidal changes, including small-scale fishing, shellfish harvesting, and boat-based daily travel. The surrounding area also contains mangrove forests that serve as an important ecosystem, helping reduce wave impact and acting as a nursery for marine life. It is also a learning site that clearly reflects the impacts of climate change and coastal transformation.

Within the community, there are collections of historical artifacts and local heritage stories, including old fishing tools and evidence of environmental change, helping visitors understand the long-term transformation of the land.Wat Khun Samut Chin is therefore not only a tourist destination, but also a real-world example of the relationship between humans, nature, and the ongoing impacts of environmental change.
