“Worship the Buddha's holy relics at the top of the golden pagoda and enjoy a panoramic view that includes "Luang Pho To" of Wat Muang, clearly visible from the 8th floor.”

Tha It Temple is an ancient community temple with a long and rich history, established in 1761 during the late Ayutthaya period. The name of the temple originates from local history, which recounts that this area was once a site for molding and firing bricks, as well as a river port used to transport bricks for the construction of the nearby Khun Inthapramun Temple. When a temple was later established in this area as the community expanded, it was named “Wat Tha It,” reflecting the historical roots of the location and the traditional way of life of the local people.

Within the temple are several highly revered sacred Buddha images that serve as spiritual anchors for the community. These include “Luang Pho Phet,” the principal Buddha image enshrined in the ordination hall, and “Luang Pho Khao,” a stucco Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture dating from the Ayutthaya period, housed in the Maha-Uttam Vihara. Both images reflect the prosperity of Buddhism and the deep-rooted faith that has been passed down through generations.

The most remarkable highlight of Tha It Temple is the “Phra That Chedi Si Pho Thong,” a massive octagonal stupa standing 73 meters high and 40 meters wide. Its radiant golden color and majestic appearance combine architectural influences from Sri Lankan, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin art in perfect harmony. The stupa was initiated by Luang Pho Hom (Phra Khru Sukhontha Silakhun) to enshrine a relic from the neck of the Lord Buddha and was constructed as a royal merit-making dedication to His Majesty King Rama IX upon his recovery from illness. The stupa was officially granted the name “Phra That Chedi Si Pho Thong.”

The atmosphere within the temple grounds is serene, orderly, and conducive to spiritual reflection. Visitors are able to walk inside the stupa, which consists of ten levels, each enshrining Buddha images in various postures along with beautifully detailed decorative motifs rich in Buddhist teachings. The most popular level is the eighth floor, which serves as a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of the lush green rice fields surrounding Pho Thong District. From the western side, visitors can clearly see “Luang Pho To” of Wat Muang, the largest Buddha image in the world, standing prominently amid the fields.

For those interested in architecture and Buddhist art, a visit to Tha It Temple provides a profound experience of faith expressed through monumental and intricate construction. Photographers can capture stunning images of the golden stupa reflecting sunlight or rare elevated views of the rural landscape. Many visitors share the same impression that the stupa is truly magnificent, accessible for climbing to enjoy the surrounding views, and is a destination that should be visited at least once when traveling to Ang Thong Province.

Visiting Tha It Temple is therefore a harmonious blend of historical tourism and sacred worship. The temple offers spiritual tranquility, historical insight, and visual inspiration, making it one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks in Ang Thong Province.
