“A two-story golden teakwood Gingerbread-style house with delicate fretwork, 72 doors and windows, an ancient underground prison, and recipient of the Outstanding Architectural Conservation Award.”

Khum Chao Luang Phrae was built in 1892 (B.E. 2435) by Chao Piriyatepwong, the last ruler of Phrae, during the city’s peak prosperity driven by the northern teakwood industry. The residence clearly reflects the wealth, authority, and refined taste of the ruling elite of that era.

Following Thailand’s administrative reforms, the mansion was repurposed as the official residence of the Governor of Phrae Province, a function it continues to serve today. While certain elements were adjusted over time—such as modifying the main staircase to a single access point—the original structure and architectural identity have been carefully preserved.

The site also holds great royal significance, having served as a royal residence during visits by:

  • His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, during their visit to Phrae in 1958

  • Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, during the opening ceremony of the Chalermrajkumari Library in Long District

As such, the mansion is regarded as a symbol of pride and cultural heritage for the people of Phrae.

Architecture

The building represents a refined fusion of Thai and European architecture, specifically the Gingerbread House style, influenced by British Victorian design and interpreted through skilled Lanna craftsmanship.

Notable architectural features include:

  • A two-story brick-and-mortar structure with an underground basement

  • No pile foundation; instead, massive hardwood logs were embedded to support the structure

  • A hipped roof, originally covered with traditional wooden shingles

  • A prominent front portico with a triangular gable roof

  • Exquisite wooden fretwork decorating the exterior

  • A total of 72 doors and windows, famously praised in a Lanna poetic verse (Kao Ham) by Sriwijai (Kho)

Interior Spaces

Upper Floor
Displays personal belongings, antique furniture, carved ivory, and historical photographs, illustrating the aristocratic lifestyle of Phrae’s former rulers. One room served as the royal bedroom of King Rama IX during his visit.

Basement (Ancient Prison)
With a ceiling height_ of approximately 2 meters, this area was once used to detain prisoners convicted of serious crimes. It is divided into dark cells and light cells based on the severity of punishment. The solemn atmosphere makes it the most intriguing area for visitors.

Cultural and Historical Significance

More than an architectural landmark, Khum Chao Luang Phrae stands as an important historical record of the transition from autonomous Lanna city-states to centralized Siamese governance. Its recognition with the Outstanding Architectural Conservation Award further confirms its national cultural and architectural value.
