“A picturesque border village located about 205 km from Leh, featuring winding mountainous roads, guesthouses, and cafes with stunning views of the Nubra Valley and Shyok River.”

Turtuk Village is a remote Muslim settlement situated in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, India, near the India-Pakistan border. It lies approximately 205 kilometers from Leh via a winding and sometimes challenging mountainous road along the Diskit-Turtuk route.

Historically, Turtuk was under Pakistani administration until 1971 and is one of the three Balti villages under Indian control along the border, alongside Tyakshi and Thang. The local population primarily speaks Balti, Ladakhi, and Urdu, reflecting a unique cultural blend.

The village is perched on the banks of the Shyok River and offers spectacular natural scenery. It also serves as an access point to the Siachen Glacier in Pakistan. Turtuk is the last village on the Indian side where tourists are allowed entry near the sensitive border area.

Within the village, there are 3-4 guesthouses and a nature cafe offering beautiful views of the valley and river. The accommodations are simple and ideal for backpackers and travelers who seek an authentic experience immersed in nature and local lifestyle.

Visitors can enjoy walking through the village, meeting the friendly local community, and learning about their traditional lifestyle centered around livestock rearing. Due to limited facilities, it is recommended to stay overnight in the Nubra Valley for convenience.

How to Get There
  • About a 6 to 8-hour drive from Leh via the scenic but winding and sometimes difficult Diskit-Turtuk Road

  • Vehicles such as taxis or motorbikes are commonly used for the last stretch to the village

Travel Tips
  • Bring warm clothing and gear suitable for cold mountain weather

  • Carry sufficient food and water as facilities in the village are limited

  • Respect local Muslim customs and traditions

  • Staying overnight in local guesthouses is highly recommended for a genuine cultural experience

  • Ensure all required permits and documents are in order when visiting this sensitive border region

Opening Hours

  • Open year-round but access may be restricted or affected by winter weather conditions
