“Marvel at the flowing morning sea of mist resembling white ocean waves and experience the lifestyle of the Thai Phu Khao Thong community in a self-settlement area.”

Phu Sala is a hidden gem located in Phu Khao Thong Subdistrict, Sukhirin District. The area holds historical significance as part of the "Sukhirin Self-Settlement Project", established in 1976 when villagers from Northeastern Thailand migrated here under government policy. This migration created a unique cultural blend of language, cuisine, and agricultural practices rooted in Isan traditions along Thailand’s southern border. The name “Phu Sala” derives from the ridge’s alternating steep and flat terrain, where a pavilion was built to allow travelers to rest and admire panoramic views of the Sankalakhiri mountain range, the natural border between Thailand and Malaysia.

From an ecological perspective, Phu Salaserves as an important vantage point for observing the richness of the "Hala-Bala Forest", the largest tropical rainforest in the upper Malay Peninsula. A major attraction is the phenomenon known as the "flowing sea of mist", formed when cool mountain air meets moisture rising from the forest below, creating a vast white blanket of fog covering the valleys like a traditional landscape painting. The hiking trail to the summit is often described as a “minimal” forest path, as it is not overly dense and is relatively easy to walk. Along the way, visitors may encounter rare plant species such as ancient ferns and wild ginger varieties. Visiting this destination is not only about witnessing mist-covered scenery but also about understanding the ecological importance of the Sai Buri watershed and the community’s efforts to preserve this natural heritage.

How to Get There
  • Private Car: From Narathiwat town, take Highway 4057 via Ra-ngae District toward Sukhirin District. Upon reaching Phu Khao Thong Subdistrict, turn onto the road leading to Ban Phu Khao Thong. Follow the signs to Phu Sala viewpoint. The road becomes steep and narrow in some sections, so a high-powered vehicle is recommended.
  • Public Transport: Take a van from Narathiwat to Sukhirin or a local songthaew from Chandi Market to Sukhirin District. From there, hire a local pickup truck or motorcycle taxi from the Phu Khao Thong community to reach the viewpoint, as no public transportation goes directly to the summit.

Travel Tips
  • The best mist season is from February to April and shortly after the rainy season. Arrive at the summit by 05:30 hrs. to witness the first light.
  • Camping areas are available. Bring warm clothing and insect repellent as temperatures can be cool and forest insects are common.
  • Consider ordering food from the Phu Khao Thong community to support local income and try Northeastern-style dishes adapted to local flavors.
  • Some sections of the hiking trail may be steep and slippery. Carry a small bottle of drinking water during the ascent.
