“Pay respects inside a traditional wooden viharn built from high-quality forest timber, surrounded by tranquil mountain scenery, and enjoy the breathtaking sea of mist covering Sukhirin Valley in the early morning.”

Wat Phukhao Thong Sukhirin has a history closely connected to the establishment of the Sukhirin self-settlement project and the migration of people from various regions who came to cultivate land and pan for gold in the past. The temple stands as a symbol of faith that united settlers from diverse backgrounds in a land surrounded by mountains and dense forests.

The architecture is distinguished by the use of wood as the primary construction material, including the ordination hall and sermon hall. This reflects the historical abundance of forest resources in the Sankalakhiri mountain range. The woodwork is refined and simple, yet elegant, representing local craftsmanship adapted to the humid tropical rainforest climate.

In terms of landscape and eco-tourism value, the temple occupies one of the most scenic viewpoints in Sukhirin District. From its elevated position, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Phukhao Thong Village and the surrounding forest of Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, often referred to as the “Amazon of ASEAN.”

During early mornings, especially after rainfall, a thick sea of mist gently blankets the valleys below, creating a peaceful and almost ethereal atmosphere. This stunning scenery has earned the temple the nickname “The Temple Above the Clouds.”

Beyond its natural beauty, Wat Phukhao Thong serves as a cultural preservation center for the local community. The annual Bun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival), brought by settlers from northeastern Thailand, has become a unique tradition of Sukhirin. Visiting the temple is therefore not only a spiritual journey for merit-making but also an opportunity to learn about the district’s settlement history, traditional gold mining lifestyle, and the resilience of a community that harmoniously coexists with nature in Thailand’s southernmost region.
