“The giant wind turbine viewing point atop Khao Yai Thiang, part of EGAT's Lam Takhong Chonlapawatana Power Plant, offers a beautiful bird's-eye view of the Lam Takhong Reservoir. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the wind is cool and refreshing, and it is an important energy learning center.”

Lamtakhong Wind Turbine Generators, situated atop Khao Yai Tiang, is managed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). It forms an integral part of the Lam Ta Khong Jolabha Vadhana Power Plant. This project is not merely a tourist attraction but a source of national pride in energy engineering, as it houses Thailand's first and only underground pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant.

The core principle of this power plant is to manage surplus energy within the system: during periods of low electricity demand (such as nighttime), the plant consumes power from the grid to pump water from the lower Lam Ta Khong Reservoir up into the Upper Reservoir (on Khao Yai Tiang). When peak electricity demand hits, the stored water is quickly released to flow down and spin the turbines deep underground, allowing the plant to inject electric power into the grid immediately. This represents an efficient and intelligent use of energy resources.

Above the subterranean power station lies the Wind Farm, where large electricity-generating wind turbines are beautifully arranged along the ridge of Khao Yai Tiang. This farm serves as EGAT's pilot project for wind energy and is a vital learning center for renewable energy. Some turbines utilize advanced technology, allowing the blades to yaw with the wind direction, maximizing energy capture from the strong breezes characteristic of the mountaintop.

This site has been developed into a key viewpoint and recreational area for Nakhon Ratchasima province. The area surrounding the Upper Reservoir offers several kilometers of paved paths perfect for cycling and walking, providing tourists with cool, fresh air and a rare 360-degree panoramic view. From this vantage point, visitors can appreciate the complex overlapping mountain ranges, the vast expanse of the Lam Ta Khong Reservoir below, and, after sunset, the sparkling lights of the Mitraparp Road and nearby communities.

Ultimately, a visit to Khao Yai Tiang offers more than just photo opportunities with the giant wind turbines; it is a chance to learn about energy innovation and enjoy well-preserved natural beauty under the stewardship of a state enterprise.

How to Get There
  • Directions: Take Mittraphap Road (Highway 2).

  • From Korat/Bangkok: Look for the intersection leading to Sikhiu District or Khlong Phai Intersection (opposite the Nakhon Ratchasima Women's Correctional Institution). Then, turn onto the small road leading up to Khao Yai Thiang.

Travel Tips
  • Best time to visit: Early morning (to watch the sunrise) or late afternoon (to watch the sunset) to avoid the intense heat during the day.

  • Precautions: The winds can be quite strong up there, so be careful not to carry hats or other items that might blow away.

  • Activities: We recommend renting a bicycle to cycle around the reservoir for a truly comprehensive experience.
