“The original mailbox is 2.9 meters tall, built in 1924, and a replica stands 9 meters high, making it a striking and popular photo spot”
The Betong Giant Mailbox is one of the most iconic symbols of Betong District, with a history dating back to 1924. It was initiated by Sawang Jirachinda, a former mayor, who designed it larger than typical mailboxes for better visibility and community use
A unique feature of the original mailbox is the speaker installed on top, used in the past to broadcast news before modern communication systems existed, making it not only a mailbox but also a local information hub
The original structure stands at the Betong Clock Tower and remains functional to this day, preserving its historical design for over a century
Later, a larger replica about 3.5 times bigger and around 9 meters tall was built in front of the Civic Hall to support tourism and serve as a prominent photo landmark
Both the original and replica mailboxes are still operational, allowing visitors to send postcards and experience a connection between past and present
Culturally, the giant mailbox represents community bonding and the evolution of communication in Betong, from traditional announcements to the digital era
Today, the surrounding area has become a lively tourist hub with shops, restaurants, and photo spots, especially vibrant in the evening when the clock tower lights up
