“ Highlighted Content A renovated 60-year-old wooden house blending local heritage with modern design, featuring creative Naga street art murals scattered throughout this charming agricultural village.”

The Life Community Museum located in Ban Khi Lek Yai, Bueng Kan Province, was founded by Mr. Suttipong Suriya also known as "Khab" a renowned national food stylist. Driven by a passion to develop his hometown into a creative agricultural tourism destination, he transformed his family’s 60-year-old traditional wooden house into a contemporary masterpiece. The renovation follows the philosophy of simple is beautiful preserving the original Isan architectural structure while infusing a modern, minimalist interior. The use of clean white tones contrasted with natural wood textures creates a serene atmosphere that perfectly bridges the gap between historical heritage and modern aesthetics.

Inside the museum, everyday items from traditional Isan life—such as intricate wickerwork, hand-woven fabrics, and antique kitchenware—are curated and displayed as pieces of art. The surrounding area is thoughtfully designed to include organic gardens and pathways that lead visitors into the heart of the village. A standout feature of the museum is the "Paint the Town" project, where art students collaborated to create vibrant street art murals on the walls of local villagers' homes. These murals predominantly feature the "Naga," a mythical creature deeply revered by those living along the Mekong River, reimagined in a friendly, contemporary cartoon style that appeals to international visitors.

The success of the Life Community Museum extends far beyond its visual appeal; it serves as a prominent model for Social Enterprise. By actively involving the residents of Ban Khi Lek Yai, the project has fostered a sense of communal ownership and pride. Locals warmly welcome tourists, maintain the village's cleanliness, and sell their organic produce and handcrafted goods, ensuring that the economic benefits are shared within the community. A visit to this museum is not just a photo opportunity in a beautiful setting, but an immersive experience into the heart of a community dedicated to preserving its roots through world-class design and sustainable tourism.

How to Get There

  • Explore the Village Murals: Don't just stay inside the main museum house. Take a walk through the alleys of Ban Khi Lek Yai to discover various "Naga" street art murals hidden on the walls of local villagers' homes.

  • Support Local Products: Be sure to try the local herbal drinks or purchase souvenirs like organic rice and handcrafted wicker baskets, which directly supports the community's economy.

  • Best Time to Visit: Arrive in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, as most activities involve outdoor walking and visiting a traditional wooden house without air conditioning.

  • Respect Local Privacy: Since the street art is located on private properties, please keep your voice down and avoid entering personal residential areas without permission from the owners.
