Wat Ratchakhue, locally known as Wat Mai, is an ancient community temple established in 1900 AD (B.E. 2443). The temple was built on the site of the former Wat Mahaphon, a sacred religious area with a history dating back over 1,300 years, making it one of the oldest and most significant spiritual locations in Phayao.

Arch Gate: The first striking feature visitors encounter is the grand arch gate at the temple entrance, built of brick and plaster. It is exquisitely decorated with stucco carvings of celestial beings, angels, and nagas. The top of the gate is adorned with an intricate four-faced Brahma sculpture that reflects exceptional craftsmanship and Lanna-style elegance.

Ordination Hall (Ubosot): Inside the temple stands a large ordination hall measuring about 20 meters wide and nearly 40 meters long. It houses a beautifully gilded sandstone Buddha image in Lanna style, highly revered for its artistry and deep spiritual significance among the people of Phayao.

Chedi: Behind the ordination hall stands the main chedi, built in an octagonal shape with twelve-angled corners — a design influenced by early Chiang Saen art. The chedi is approximately 20 meters high, featuring niches on all four sides, surrounded by smaller satellite stupas. The main stupa’s golden coating gleams brightly under the sunlight, creating a majestic and serene view.

The temple’s refined architecture harmoniously blends Lanna and Chiang Saen styles, making Wat Ratchakhue one of Phayao’s most beautiful and historically significant temples.

From Downtown Phayao:

• Start from the Clock Tower roundabout and take Phahonyothin Road (old route) toward Phayao City Pillar Shrine. After about 1 km, continue for another 200 meters past the shrine, then turn onto Ratchakhue Road. The temple is located on the right-hand side with a clearly visible sign.

From Phayao Bus Terminal:

• Drive along Phahonyothin Road toward the city center for about 2 km. Pass the Pratu Chai intersection, then turn left onto Ratchakhue Road. Continue straight for about 500 meters; the temple will be on your right.

By Songthaew (Shared Taxi):

• Take the blue local route within the city and tell the driver to stop at “Wat Ratchakhue.” It is a well-known stop, and the vehicle can drop you right in front of the temple.

By Bicycle or on Foot:

• If you are staying in the city area, Wat Ratchakhue is only about 1 km from Kwan Phayao and easily reachable by a short 10–15 minute walk or a 5-minute bike ride.

• Photo Spot: The grand arch gate and the octagonal chedi are perfect for architectural photography, especially in the morning or late afternoon when the sunlight enhances the golden tones.

• Dress Code: Please dress modestly and respectfully when visiting this religious site.

• Historical Significance: Look closely at ancient relics and architectural traces within the temple grounds that reflect the prosperity of the ancient Lanna kingdom.
