“The crystal-clear emerald pond reflects stunning limestone mountains. A serene and peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxing and capturing beautiful, surreal photos amidst nature.”

Khun Nam Morakot, often called "Emerald Pool" or "Khun Nam Morakot," is actually part of the same natural landscape as Khun Nam Nang Non, located in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, near the Tham Luang Khun Nam Nang Non cave area. This area is a natural spring formed from the underground water system of the Doi Nang Non limestone mountain range. The water is exceptionally clear and has a bluish-green hue due to the reflection of light and minerals within it.

The pools here were not man-made but are natural basins created by the accumulation of groundwater rising through the limestone layers. This results in clear water where the bottom is visible at certain times of the day. The beauty of the water changes with the seasons, rainfall, and sunlight, especially during the early morning and late afternoon when the sunlight reflects off the water's surface, revealing the most striking emerald green color.

This area is situated in a mountainous and deciduous forest region of northern Thailand, resulting in a shady and relatively cooler climate compared to flatter areas. Tourists visiting the area often come to relax, enjoy nature, and photograph the clear water against a backdrop of limestone mountains and lush greenery. However, some areas remain natural zones under the care of local authorities and the national park, so strict adherence to regulations is crucial, such as refraining from littering and avoiding disturbing the ecosystem.

Overall, the natural pools in the Khun Nam Nang Non zone are considered one of Chiang Rai's outstanding natural attractions. While not a large-scale commercial tourist destination, it clearly reflects the beauty of the groundwater ecosystem and karst landscape of northern Thailand, making it ideal for tourists seeking a simple and peaceful natural experience.

How to Get There
  • The most convenient way is by private car. Drive along the Mae Sai-Chiang Saen road (Highway 1290). Look for signs leading to the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park. Follow the route to the Khun Nam Nang Non area where parking is available.

Travel Tips
  • Visit in the morning for the clearest emerald water and soft light
  • Late afternoon provides warm light ideal for mountain photography
  • Avoid heavy rainy days as water may become less clear and paths muddy
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes due to natural and uneven terrain
