“The majestic bronze statue of Sgt. Sam in diving gear, designed by National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat accompanied by a pavilion gallery showcasing paintings and stories of global cooperation.”
Saman Kunan Memorial widely known as Sergeant Sam, stands proudly in front of Tham Luang cave to honor and commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of this former Thai Navy SEAL. Despite being retired from active duty at the time, Sgt. Sam followed a spirit of profound humanity and volunteered to join the international diving rescue team in one of the world's most difficult missions.
The history of courage that the world will never forget occurred on the night of July 5, 2018. Sgt. Sam was assigned the crucial task of delivering oxygen tanks from Chamber 3 to various points within the cave to prepare for the boys' extraction. During the dive back, Sgt. Sam lost consciousness underwater due to insufficient air in his tank and the grueling environment. Despite the best efforts of his fellow divers to revive him, he passed away in the darkness of Tham Luang. The news of his loss brought grief to the world, yet it simultaneously became a powerful catalyst, fueling the determination of the international rescue teams to bring the boys out successfully so that his sacrifice would not be in vain.
This monument was created through the collaboration of world-class artists, led by National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The bronze statue, standing approximately 3.20 meters tall, depicts Sgt. Sam on a base shaped like a rocky outcrop adorned with 13 wild boars, symbolizing his mission to protect and lead the children to safety. The statue’s facial expression is designed to convey determination blended with compassion. Surrounding the monument is the "Gallery Pavilion," which houses the massive painting "The Heroes," detailing the story of all volunteers, both Thai and international, with exquisite artistry.
For visitors, standing before this monument is to witness the true definition of a Hero. Sergeant Sam is not just a symbol of the rescue he represents love, sacrifice, and the inherent goodness that transcends human limits. This site is therefore not only for tourism but serves as a reminder to everyone of the beauty of giving and provides inspiration to do good for others.
