“A tranquil religious site located southwest of Koh Samui, this hilltop enshrines four footprints of the Buddha and offers a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the sea and forests of the island.”

Phra Phutthabat Khao Le Temple, also referred to as Khao Le Footprint Sanctuary, is an ancient site of profound historical significance on Koh Samui. Historical accounts link this sacred location to the royal journeys of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who visited the island in 1888. Records from that period mention the existence of a Buddha footprint replica enshrined on this hilltop, serving as a spiritual beacon for the local community and a symbol of the deep-rooted Buddhist faith on the island. Nestled within the lush rainforest and expansive coconut plantations of the Na Mueang sub-district, the site has preserved its sanctity and natural beauty for over a century.

The architectural highlight begins with the "Naga Staircase," consisting of approximately 150 steps that ascend steeply through the dense canopy, symbolizing a spiritual journey toward higher consciousness. At the summit sits an open-air cruciform pavilion (Mondop), designed to harmonize with the tropical climate by allowing constant airflow. Inside, the primary object of veneration is the "Four Overlapping Buddha Footprints." These footprints, meticulously cast in plaster, are nested within one another in descending order of size. According to Theravada Buddhist cosmology, this represents the footprints of the four Buddhas who have already appeared in this "Bhadrakalpa" (the current auspicious aeon): Kakusandha, Konagamana, Kassapa, and Gotama (the present Buddha). Each footprint is intricately adorned with 108 auspicious signs, and it is a long-standing tradition for devotees to apply gold leaf until the entire relic glows with a golden hue.

Beyond its spiritual essence, Khao Le’s elevation offers one of Koh Samui's most prestigious vantage points. From the pavilion's terrace, visitors are treated to a sweeping 360-degree panoramic view of the island's southwestern coastline, where the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand meet the emerald horizon. The view captures the vast, undisturbed coconut groves of Na Mueang, showcasing the island's traditional landscape. Today, the temple continues to function as a vipassana meditation center, prioritizing silence and mindfulness. This absence of commercial development ensures that the atmosphere remains serene and untouched, making it a unique destination where history, faith, and nature coexist in perfect tranquility.

How to Get There
  • From the road around the island (4169), turn into Soi 1 towards Na Muang Waterfall. Look for the sign for the entrance to the monastery and drive up the hill following the road in the community until you reach the parking lot at the foot of the hill. It is recommended to use a motorcycle or private car as there is no public transport access. Then you have to walk up the Naga staircase about 150 steps to reach the viewpoint and the Buddha's footprint pavilion.

Travel Tips
  • Wear sturdy and comfortable walking shoes for safety while climbing the steep stairs.

  • Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered to respect the sacred temple grounds.

  • Arrive early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the best light.

  • Carry a bottle of water with you as there are no shops available at the summit.

  • Keep noise to a minimum to respect the peaceful environment of the practicing monks.

  • Bring insect repellent as the temple is located within a lush, forested area.

  • Keep your camera ready for one of the most stunning panoramic views on Koh Samui.

  • Check the weather forecast as the staircase can become very slippery during rain.
