“A royal temple of Trang featuring an old ordination hall registered as an archaeological site.”

Wat Kapang Surin is a significant historical temple in Trang Province, established in 1897 during the late reign of King Rama V. The land was donated by a local philanthropist named Chao Sae, and the temple was originally called “Wat Kapang” after the large natural pond beside it, which served as a community gathering place for centuries.

Later, the temple was renamed “Wat Kapang Surin” in honor of Phraya Surin Racha (Nok Yoong Wisetkun), the commissioner of Phuket Circle who played a crucial role in developing the Kapang Pond area into a public park. This established the temple as both a religious and cultural landmark at the heart of Trang city.

One of the most remarkable structures in the temple complex is the old ordination hall, built with wooden pillars and brick–stucco walls in traditional Southern Thai style. Its elegant Jaturamuk (four-gabled) design is rare among local temples and adds a distinctive character to the architecture.

Inside, the hall houses a sacred principal Buddha image and features ancient mural paintings that depict Buddhist history, Jataka tales, and important moral teachings created by highly skilled local artisans.

The Fine Arts Department registered the hall as an archaeological site in 1999, confirming its historical and artistic value.

Wat Kapang Surin serves not only as a place of worship but also as a vital spiritual and educational hub:

  • It is home to the Sahaprachasan Buddhist Scripture School, producing knowledgeable monks trained in Buddhist studies.

  • It has been the residence of high-ranking monks, including Somdet Phra Maha Wachiramangalacharn, the chief monk of the Southern region.

  • The temple hosts major Buddhist ceremonies and events such as Visakha Bucha, Makha Bucha, candle-light rituals, and traditional merit-making festivals.

The temple has long been a center of faith and community activities for the people of Trang.

Adjacent to the temple lies Kapang Surin Pond, one of Trang’s most beloved public parks. With refreshing breezes, walking paths, and shaded sitting areas, visitors can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing environment after paying respects at the temple.

How to Get There
  • By private car: From Trang city center, drive along Wisetkul Road toward Kapang Surin Intersection. Turn onto Wian Kapang Road. The temple is directly opposite Kapang Surin Pond and has convenient parking.
