“Dramatic black rock formations set against emerald Andaman waters inside Tarutao National Park, creating a rare geological seascape with a peaceful and untouched atmosphere.”

Koh Hin Lek, also known as “Hin Lek Fai Island,” is a small island located within Tarutao National Park in Satun Province, southern Thailand. It lies among the Adang-Rawi island group, part of the Andaman Sea’s highly diverse marine ecosystem, and remains relatively untouched compared to more popular nearby destinations.

Geologically, the island is famous for its dark, iron-like rock formations, shaped over millions of years by wave erosion, wind, and saltwater weathering. These processes have created sharp, rugged textures and naturally polished surfaces that reflect light like metallic stone. When sunlight hits the rocks, they contrast dramatically with the emerald-green sea, creating a powerful and visually striking landscape.

Unlike sandy tropical beaches, Koh Hin Lek is surrounded mainly by rocky shorelines and submerged stone formations, giving it a raw and dramatic coastal character. Small tide pools and underwater rock structures also provide habitats for various marine species.

The surrounding waters are rich in marine biodiversity, featuring staghorn coral, boulder coral, brain coral, and soft corals, along with tropical fish such as clownfish, parrotfish, and reef fish. The clear water conditions make the area suitable for snorkeling, especially during the dry season when visibility is at its best.

Because it is not a major tourist hotspot, the island remains quiet and naturally preserved, offering a more authentic experience of the Andaman Sea compared to busier destinations like Koh Lipe.

From a landscape perspective, Koh Hin Lek is highly photogenic, especially during sunrise and late afternoon when the black rocks cast deep shadows against the turquoise sea. This creates a dramatic, rugged, and powerful visual identity rarely found in other Thai islands.

In addition, the island serves as an important site for geological observation and marine ecology, allowing visitors to witness natural erosion processes and coastal formation in a relatively undisturbed environment. It is ideal for travelers interested in nature, geology, and off-the-beaten-path exploration.
