Sa Kaeo Roundabout, officially known as “Si Suriyothai Roundabout,” is one of the most important landmarks of New Lopburi City. It was constructed during the era of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram as part of a modern urban development plan, intended to serve as a strategic center for transportation, administration, and residential areas for government officials and military personnel. A large circular pond was excavated to function as a water reservoir, with the surrounding area designed as a major traffic roundabout.

The most striking feature is the central monument in the middle of the pond, designed as a giant ceremonial tray supporting a victory candle. This monument symbolizes victory, prosperity, and national sovereignty. Surrounding the tray are emblems of various government ministries of that era, clearly reflecting the nationalist ideology and modern state concept of the time.

At the bases of the bridges on all four cardinal directions, there are eight kneeling Khotchasi (lion-elephant mythical creatures). These figures represent strength, authority, and stability, particularly symbolizing military power and national defense. As a result, the roundabout functions not only as a public space but also as an ideological monument of its time.

The atmosphere around the roundabout is shaded, peaceful, and welcoming, with walkways and seating areas encircling the pond. It is a popular spot for locals to walk, exercise, relax, or enjoy the evening breeze, serving as a central gathering place for the community.

Sa Kaeo Roundabout is also the main venue for one of Lopburi’s largest traditional Loy Krathong festivals, where residents dress in traditional Thai costumes, creating a vivid and nostalgic atmosphere that brings the past to life. Despite ongoing urban expansion, the roundabout continues to stand as a center of collective memory and pride for the people of New Lopburi City.
