“Ancient Dvaravati sandstone boundary stones over 1,000 years old, connected to the Fa Daet Song Yang archaeological site. A peaceful atmosphere beside a water source, ideal for paying respects and learning about history.”

Wat Kut Khong Chai Wanararam is located in Khong Chai District, Kalasin Province, in an area closely connected to the ancient Chi–Lam Pao river basin civilization, particularly the Dvaravati culture and the Fa Daet Song Yang archaeological site, which was once an important center of Buddhist art and religion in the central Isan region. The area surrounding the temple was once an ancient settlement, resulting in the discovery of numerous sandstone boundary stones (sema stones). These are important archaeological evidence of the demarcation of sacred Buddhist boundaries during the Dvaravati period. These sema stones were used to define the sacred areas of religious structures such as ordination halls and ceremonial spaces.

The discovered sema stones vary in style, ranging from plain, uncarved slabs to elaborately carved pieces depicting Buddhist history and Jataka tales. They also include motifs such as stupas and Buddhist symbols like the Dharma wheel and the Bodhi tree, reflecting the artistic development and religious beliefs of people in different historical periods.Wat Kut Khong Chai Wanararam is culturally linked to the Fa Daet Song Yang site, which was a major center of Dvaravati civilization. Scholars suggest that Khong Chai may have been part of a network of settlements or a religious route connecting surrounding communities to this ancient urban center.

Today, the temple has collected and preserved these discovered sema stones in a semi-museum exhibition area, allowing visitors and the public to study and learn from them. Some stones are also arranged according to archaeological principles to illustrate how they may have originally been used in the past.Despite its archaeological value, the temple remains an active spiritual center for the local community, with ongoing religious activities and Buddhist ceremonies. The ordination hall and sacred areas remain open for worship, where people come to pay respect and seek blessings for good fortune in daily life.
