“Swim in cool emerald-green natural pools surrounded by uniquely shaped rock formations and experience the rich biodiversity of rare tropical rainforest flora.”
Wang Thong Waterfall, also known as Mo Ta Ko Waterfall, has long been connected to the Muslim community of Bo-ngo Subdistrict. The name “Mo Ta Ko” comes from the local Malay language, referring to a legendary figure believed to have first discovered the waterfall. The area holds significant ecological value as it lies along the boundary of the Sankalakhiri Range, a natural frontier between Thailand and Malaysia. The surrounding forest is a highly fertile Tropical Rain Forest, serving as a vital watershed that feeds several streams flowing into the Sai Buri River and acting as an important biological buffer that maintains humidity for Ra-ngae District and nearby areas.
From a geological and natural science perspective, Wang Thong Waterfall features distinctive sandstone formations with cascading tiers. The most popular level is the wide natural pool, locally called a “wang,” which inspired the waterfall’s name. When sunlight reflects off the clear water onto the sandy bottom and submerged rocks at midday, it creates shimmering golden hues. The surrounding vegetation is remarkably diverse, including giant ferns, Takian Thong trees, royal ferns, and vibrant green moss clinging to rock surfaces. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers and butterfly enthusiasts, as it supports various species of butterflies and rare forest birds. Visitors can enjoy short nature trails leading to higher tiers of the waterfall, offering panoramic views of lush green valleys and fresh, clean air throughout the year. A visit to Wang Thong Waterfall is not only a leisure escape but also an immersion into the spirit of an intact tropical rainforest ecosystem.
