“Phra That Tung Kham features a radiant golden Lanna-style bell-shaped pagoda enshrining sacred Buddha relics. The name “Tung Kham” means Golden Banner, symbolizing victory and prosperity, and the temple serves as a spiritual center for the traditional Tan Tung merit-making ceremony.”

Wat Phra That Tung Kham has long been the spiritual heart of Ban Thung Khaeo and Nong Muang Khai communities. In Lanna tradition, a “Tung” is a ceremonial banner symbolizing virtue and celebration. Combined with “Kham,” meaning gold, the name represents a Golden Banner of Dharma and auspicious victory, firmly rooted in both the land and the faith of local Buddhists.

The main pagoda is a classic Lanna bell-shaped chedi with a twelve-cornered base, authentically reflecting northern Thai architectural artistry. The exterior is covered with golden plates and painted in bright gold, creating a brilliant glow when touched by sunlight. Inside are enshrined sacred Buddha relics, deeply revered by residents and visiting devotees alike.

The temple’s viharn (assembly hall) showcases applied Lanna architecture, elegant and harmonious in design. Inside, mural paintings illustrate the life of the Buddha, local literature, and traditional Phrae ways of life, allowing visitors to gain cultural insight while making merit.

A distinctive feature of the temple is the display of various types of “Tung” banners, including Tung Sai Moo, ribbon-style Tung, and Tung Kham. According to ancient belief, offering a Tung dedicates merit to departed loved ones and helps dispel misfortune. During the annual relic bathing ceremony, the temple becomes vibrant with colorful banners, devotion, and traditional performances.

Situated on a small hill and surrounded by lush greenery, Wat Phra That Tung Kham offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere, ideal for meditation, quiet reflection, and experiencing authentic Lanna Buddhist culture. It is perfect for travelers seeking cultural enrichment alongside spiritual tranquility.
