“Lush, peaceful nature trails perfect for relaxation, offering stunning scenic views of Wiang Chiang Rung district surrounded by fresh, clean air all year round.”
Doi Phra Bat Forest Park is located within the Huai Sak and Mae Kok Right Bank National Forest Reserve in Thung Ko Subdistrict, Wiang Chiang Rung District, Chiang Rai Province. Covering approximately 3,000 rai (about 1,200 hectares), it was declared a forest park on October 15, 2003, to conserve natural forests, watersheds, and other important natural resources for the local community.
The park's terrain consists of complex mountain ranges covered with mixed deciduous forest and some dry evergreen forest, resulting in high biodiversity. The forest is rich in native plant species, including medicinal herbs, ferns, mosses, and naturally occurring rock-dwelling vegetation. During the rainy season, the land is lush and humid, with occasional fog, creating a tranquil atmosphere ideal for relaxation amidst nature. Nature enthusiasts can explore the trails within the park to observe plant life, birdwatch, and experience the ecosystem of a northern Thai watershed forest firsthand.
The most significant feature of Doi Phra Bat Forest Park is the replica of the "Buddha's footprint", a sacred object deeply cherished by the local community for centuries. Within the area are two footprints of the Buddha: the Northern Footprint and the Southern Footprint, located on opposite sides of the mountain range, approximately 3 kilometers apart. According to local records, they were created during the reign of Phraya Muang Kaeo, the ruler of Chiang Mai, around 2039 BE (1496 CE), along with the restoration of nearby stupas. The Northern Footprint is carved into a sloping rock face, measuring approximately 59 centimeters wide and 150 centimeters long. The Southern Footprint is approximately 85 centimeters wide and 155 centimeters long, situated on a rocky plateau on a mountain ridge with limited access.
Both footprints are considered sacred sites, revered by local people for a long time. Especially during Visakha Puja (Buddha's Birthday), people ascend to the site to perform rituals and bathe the footprints. Some communities also hold beliefs related to making wishes and seeking blessings through divination, making Doi Phrabat more than just a natural tourist attraction. It reflects the connection between the lifestyle, beliefs, and local history of the people of Chiang Rai.
In addition to its natural and cultural significance, the viewpoint within the forest park offers a panoramic view of Wiang Chiang Rung district and the surrounding areas. On clear days, the viewpoint reveals a beautiful panorama of mountain ranges, agricultural land, and local villages. Some sections of the trail to the viewpoint remain natural, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a real forest up close. It's ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend time in nature in peace and simplicity.
