Mae Charim National Park covers areas in Mae Charim and Wiang Sa districts of Nan province. It was declared the 106th national park of Thailand on 6 July 2007, covering approximately 270,000 rai (432 km²).

Topography and Forests:
Most of the area consists of rugged highlands with elevations ranging from 300 to 1,652 meters above sea level. Doi Khun Lan is the highest point at 1,652 meters. The Luang Prabang mountain range stretches across the area. Forest types include moist evergreen forest, dry evergreen forest, hill evergreen forest, pine forest, mixed deciduous forest, and teak forest, providing habitats for rare wildlife such as tigers, serows, bears, and peafowls.

Main Activities and Attractions:

  • Rafting on the Wa River:
    A key adventure activity using inflatable rafts along a river with over 10 rapids. Rafting is available almost year-round.

    • From the park office to the end point (Elephant Camp/Ban Hat Rai) – about 12–15 km, 2–3 hours.

    • Long route (Ban Nam Pu to Ban Hat Rai) – about 19.2 km.

  • Scenic drive Ban Nam Phang – Ban Rom Klao:
    Via Provincial Highway 1259, 25 km along ridge roads offering views of valleys, sea of mist in the morning, and sunsets.

  • Climbing Phanaw Cliff:
    Hiking trail to the 824-meter-high cliff for panoramic views and nearby cave exploration, approximately 8 km, about 6 hours.

  • Hiking to Waterfalls:
    Several small waterfalls are located within the park, including Huai Cha, Huai Miang, Wang Pla Tuk, and Mae Charim Waterfalls.


How to Get There

By car:

  • From Nan city, take Highways 1168 and 1243 toward Mae Charim District. The park office is approximately 60 km from Nan city.

Recommended route:

  • Via Ban Lai Nan, Ban Boon Rueang, Ban Na Sa → turn right at Ban Tha Kham, Ban Pakung, Ban Huai Son → turn left onto the road to Mae Charim District → at Ban Huai Sai Mun, turn right to reach the park office.
