“An ancient temple in the Tha Lat Subdistrict, Chum Phuang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, under the Mahanikaya sect, is an important religious site and spiritual center for the local community.”

Wat Koh Thalad is situated in Ban Thalad, Mueang 1, Thalad Subdistrict, Chum Phuang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. It is recognized as an ancient religious site, having been an integral part of the local community for a significant period, with establishment records dating back to 1899 (B.E. 2442). This long history reflects the deep-rooted and stable foundation of Buddhism in this area. While it is a relatively small non-governmental temple (Wat Rat), it serves as a spiritual heart and the central hub for religious ceremonies for the villagers in the subdistrict and nearby areas.

The temple received the Wissungkhamsima (the royal permission to build the main ordination hall) on August 28, 1986 (B.E. 2529). This is a formal recognition that the temple adheres to monastic rules and possesses clearly defined boundaries for performing major monastic rituals, such as the Sangkhakamma (act of the Sangha) and the boundary-setting ceremony (Phuk Phathasimā).

The temple grounds comprise essential monastic residences and permanent structures (Senasana and Thaworawatthu) following the typical architecture of rural temples:

  • The Ubosot (Ordination Hall): The main building designated for performing Sangkhakamma, particularly for the ordination of monks (Upasampada) and the Kathina merit-making ceremony.

  • Sala Kan Parian (Sermon Hall): Used by the monks for delivering Dharma sermons and serving as the primary area for the laity to offer food to monks (Tak Bat), listen to the Dharma, and organize religious activities during important occasions like Magha Puja Day, Visakha Puja Day, and the start of the Rains Retreat (Khao Phansa).

  • Ho Suat Mon (Chanting Hall): A specific location for the resident monks and novices to practice meditation and perform daily chanting.

  • Kuti Song (Monks' Living Quarters): Residential buildings for the monks and novices who reside at the temple.

In terms of administration and monastic governance, Wat Koh Thalad is under the supervision of the Mahanikaya order of the Thai Sangha. The abbot is responsible for managing the temple's affairs. Currently (as of 2025), there are approximately five monks residing permanently at the temple, who continue to carry out their monastic duties and serve as spiritual guides for the local community. Merit-making and the offering of essential items (Sangkhathan) are continuous activities, forming a significant part of the way of life for the people of Thalad.

Furthermore, the temple plays an important role in promoting education and culture. It often serves as a venue for public activities or acts as a center for preserving various local traditions and customs within the community. A visit to Wat Koh Thalad is therefore not just an act of merit-making but also an opportunity to connect with the cultural and spiritual roots of the Nakhon Ratchasima people in the Chum Phuang district.
