“A wide scenic lake with walking paths, ideal for relaxing, jogging, birdwatching, and enjoying peaceful sunset views”
Bueng Nong Yai (Bueng Nong Yai Reservoir) is a large natural water body, often described as a lake-like reservoir, located in Nam Khum, Si Nakhon, Sukhothai. It has been developed as a monkey cheek project to store water during the rainy season and supply it during dry periods, playing a vital role in irrigation, agriculture, and flood mitigation. It also serves as a central space for community activities.
The landscape features a vast open basin surrounded by farmland and rural communities, offering wide panoramic views. The water reflects the sky beautifully, especially during sunrise and sunset. The area has been enhanced with walking and jogging paths, paved roads, lighting, and lakeside pavilions for recreation.
In the evening, the reservoir becomes lively as locals and visitors gather to walk, run, cycle, and enjoy sunset views over distant hills, with golden reflections across the water. Community events and wellness activities are sometimes held here.
Ecologically, the reservoir supports various water birds and aquatic species, especially migratory birds during cooler months, along with aquatic plants that help maintain environmental balance.
Nearby attractions include a 300-year-old giant tamarind tree, Ban Nai Nao learning center, mango orchards, a community multipurpose hall, and local product markets (OTOP), offering insight into local lifestyle and wisdom.
The surrounding rural setting, including farming and livestock, makes this destination not only a place to relax but also a learning hub for local culture and ecology.
