“Discover the well-preserved double-layered earthen ramparts and ancient moats, pay respect to Luang Pho Khao, a revered Buddha image, and explore late Ayutthaya–period archaeological structures excavated within the ancient city area.”
The Ancient City of Wesalee is an important archaeological site that tells the story of human settlement from the late prehistoric period through to the Rattanakosin era, reflecting the long-term development of communities in the Chao Phraya River basin.
Urban Planning and Architecture
The city plan is a rounded rectangular shape, approximately 500 meters wide and 700 meters long, enclosed by two layers of earthen walls with a moat in between. This layout is characteristic of Dvaravati-era cities.
History and Restoration
The city is believed to have been established during the Dvaravati period, with connections to nearby ancient cities such as Si Thep. In the late Ayutthaya period, it was reused as a strategic military outpost, resulting in architectural remains that combine multiple historical periods.
Excavated Archaeological Remains
Excavations by the Fine Arts Department on the eastern side of the city revealed several structures, including an ordination hall, mondop, vihara, and chedi. A stucco Buddha image known locally as Luang Pho Khao, depicted in the Maravijaya posture, was also discovered and remains a spiritual center for the people of Phisali.
Archaeological Significance
The discovery of pottery and ceramic fragments confirms the city’s role as an important agricultural settlement and trading community, located along routes connecting Central Thailand with the Northeastern region.
