“ A small laterite Khmer sanctuary with a clear Arogyasala layout, peaceful atmosphere, ideal for learning history and photography. ”
Prasat Huay Kaen is a Khmer cultural site believed to have functioned as an “Arogyasala,” or community hospital, built in the late 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman VII. He initiated the construction of over 100 hospitals across the Khmer Empire to provide accessible healthcare to the population.
The architectural layout follows the standard Arogyasala plan. It consists of a main sanctuary tower constructed primarily of laterite with sandstone detailing, facing east—an auspicious direction in Hindu–Mahayana Buddhist beliefs. Inside the tower, sacred images were once enshrined, likely including Bhaisajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha), associated with healing.
To the southeast stands a rectangular library (bannalai), used for storing scriptures, medicinal items, or ritual objects. The complex is enclosed by a laterite wall that defines the sacred boundary. Additional structures such as pavilions or connecting pathways may have existed, though today only foundation traces remain.
Laterite, a locally available material, was used for the main construction, while sandstone was reserved for refined architectural elements such as door frames, lintels, and decorative details. Despite its small scale, the site clearly reflects the Bayon style of Khmer architecture—simple in form yet rich in symbolic meaning.
Historically, Arogyasala sites were strategically located along ancient road networks connecting major cities of the Khmer Empire. They functioned not only as medical centers but also as community hubs, reflecting an early concept of state-supported welfare under Jayavarman VII.
Today, Prasat Huay Kaen has been restored and is maintained by the Fine Arts Department. The clearly preserved layout makes it an excellent site for studying archaeology, Khmer art, and local history, all within a peaceful village setting.
