“A bridge crossing the Heuang River— a natural border between Thailand and Laos—offers a peaceful atmosphere with its own unique charm. Visitors can enjoy views of both countries, take photos at the border checkpoint, and browse local goods at the lively border market.”

The Thai–Lao Heuang River Friendship Bridge is considered one of the border crossings with a distinct identity, clearly different from other Thai–Lao friendship bridges in terms of geography, transportation routes, and usage patterns.

The bridge spans the Heuang River, a small river that serves as a natural boundary between Thailand and Laos. The surrounding landscape is characterized by complex mountain ranges, part of the Phu Phan and Phu Ruea highlands, creating a natural mountain pass that is well-suited for cross-border connectivity.

A key distinction is that this bridge does not cross the Mekong River like most major Thai–Lao friendship bridges. Instead, it directly links small border communities, resulting in a strong local atmosphere and close cultural connections between the two sides.

The bridge is approximately 110 meters long and supports two lanes of traffic, accommodating private cars, buses, and small trucks.

Its connected road network plays a crucial role:

  • On the Thai side, Highway 2195 links with Routes 2399 and 2115, connecting to Phu Ruea District and Loei city.

  • On the Lao side, Route 4 serves as the main road of Xayaburi Province, connecting onward to Luang Prabang.

This makes the route a “sub-corridor” that directly links northeastern Thailand with northern Laos.

The most notable advantage of Tha Li border crossing is that it provides the shortest and most direct overland route from Thailand—especially from the northeastern region—to Luang Prabang.

Compared to other crossings such as Nong Khai or Mukdahan, this route:

  • Significantly reduces overall distance

  • Saves travel time, particularly for road trip travelers

  • Is more suitable for private vehicles than large freight transport

However, some հատվածs of the road on the Lao side pass through mountainous terrain, with steep slopes and sharp curves, requiring careful and experienced driving.

The crossing has been upgraded to a permanent border checkpoint, equipped with essential infrastructure such as:

  • Immigration facilities

  • Customs systems

  • Vehicle inspection points

It supports:

  • Tourists

  • Border trade

  • Local-scale goods transportation

Border crossing procedures are relatively flexible, especially with the use of a Border Pass, which is ideal for short visits. This allows for day trips or short overnight stays in Xayaburi Province.

The Tha Li–Kaenthao border area is an active zone of local trade, with key goods including:

  • Agricultural products such as corn and cassava

  • Consumer goods from Thailand

  • Local products from Laos and Vietnam

On the Lao side, Kaenthao functions as a “frontier town” heavily reliant on border trade, with shops, markets, and services catering to travelers.

Meanwhile, on the Thai side, Ban Na Kraseng and nearby areas are gradually developing into rest stops, dining spots, and tourism service points in response to increasing traffic along this route.

More than just a crossing point, this bridge serves as a starting point for cross-cultural journeys.

Travelers can immediately experience differences upon crossing the border, including:

  • Language and accents

  • Architectural styles

  • Local lifestyles and market culture

How to Get There

By Car: From Loei city, take Highway 203 toward Phu Ruea District, then turn onto Highway 2399 toward Tha Li District. Follow the signs to “Ban Na Kraseng Border Checkpoint.” The total distance is approximately 50 kilometers.
