“Phu Pha Muak offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the sea of mist and the sunrise–sunset scenery. The atmosphere is especially pleasant during the cool winter season. From the summit, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of both Thailand and Laos — a charming feature of this borderland area.”
Phu Pha Muak sits on a high mountain range in Na Haeo District, about 500 meters above sea level. The landscape is made up of rolling hills and cliffs that open to wide panoramic views. During early mornings, the sea of mist often blankets the area in white, creating a magical and peaceful scene that nature lovers will adore.
The hiking trail to the summit is a natural forest path about 1–4 kilometers long, depending on the chosen starting point. Some sections are dirt or rocky paths with roots and slopes, requiring care, but the trail is generally well-defined. Along the way, trekkers can encounter local flora and small forest animals such as birds, squirrels, and insects, making the journey even more delightful.
At the top, there is a spacious camping area suitable for overnight stays. Campers can enjoy the stunning sea of mist at sunrise or the warm, golden light of the setting sun in the evening — both offering their own beauty. From the viewpoint, you can see the landscape of both Thailand and Laos divided by the Hueang River, making it one of the most impressive “two-nation viewpoints” in Loei Province.
The surrounding area, including nearby Phu Pha Nong, is perfect for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, birdwatching, nature photography, and quiet relaxation. During the winter, the air is cool and refreshing; in the rainy season, the lush greenery and small waterfalls make the area come alive.
For convenience and safety, it is recommended to use the “E-tak” tractors operated by local villagers to reach the camping ground, especially for visitors traveling with elderly people or children. Contacting the community enterprise group or Na Haeo Subdistrict Municipality beforehand will help ensure a smooth and safe trip.
