“(Temple), Wat Woraphrot Sangkhawas, Phan Thong District, Chon Buri, 20160”
Wat Woraprot Sangkhawat, commonly known as Wat Mai Taew, is a venerable temple of great historical significance in Phan Thong District, Chonburi. Located at 65 Moo 4, Bang Nang Subdistrict, the temple is widely renowned for housing "Luang Pho Tiu," a Buddha image in the Mara Vichaya posture carved from "Tiu" (Cratoxylum formosum) wood. The statue exhibits a blend of Lan Xang and Rattanakosin artistic styles, with its polished wooden texture radiating a sense of antiquity and divine mercy.
According to historical records, Luang Pho Tiu was brought from Vientiane, Laos, during the reign of King Rama III by Laotian settlers who moved to this region. The image is highly revered for its miraculous powers in granting peace and protection. Locals and pilgrims alike visit to pray for smooth lives and success, especially during festivals when the temple is filled with people coming to pay their respects and make merit for auspiciousness.
The temple's architecture is simple yet profound, with the old ordination hall maintaining the charm of traditional riverside temples. The grounds are shaded and tranquil, situated near the Phan Thong Canal a key historical waterway. Visiting this temple offers a chance to experience the cultural roots and traditional lifestyle of Chonburi's people, who have remained deeply connected to Buddhism for generations.
The spiritual highlight of the year is the Luang Pho Tiu Procession, held annually on the 14th day of the waxing moon in the 5th lunar month. During this event, a replica of Luang Pho Tiu is paraded through the community for locals to sprinkle water on and receive blessings. This tradition is a powerful display of the unity and unwavering faith that the people of Bang Nang have held for this sacred carved wooden Buddha for over a century.
