“A spiritual hub for Vipassana meditation famous for the legacy of Luang Pho Charan, teaching Satipatthana 4 to cultivate mindfulness and wisdom for people worldwide.”

Amphawan Temple is a royal monastery widely renowned as one of Thailand’s most important centers for Vipassana meditation practice. Located along the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Sing Buri Province, the temple plays a vital role in the propagation of Buddhist teachings, particularly those following the guidance of Phra Tham Singhaburachan (Luang Pho Charan Thitadhammo), the former abbot and a highly revered senior monk known for his profound teachings on mental cultivation.

Luang Pho Charan was widely respected for his ability to guide practitioners in applying Dhamma to everyday life. As a result, Wat Amphawan has become a destination for people from all walks of life who seek inner peace, mindfulness, and systematic spiritual development.

The temple’s most distinctive feature is its highly structured and disciplined meditation system, which emphasizes the practice of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana) through the “rising–falling” breathing technique. This method helps practitioners maintain awareness of both body and mind in every moment. The practice follows a clear daily schedule that encourages discipline, patience, and continuity in self-training.

Within the temple grounds are large meditation halls capable of accommodating a significant number of practitioners for both short-term and long-term retreats. In addition, the temple houses the Luang Pho Charan Museum, which displays his personal belongings, life history, and core teachings, allowing visitors to study and reflect upon his invaluable contributions to Buddhism.

The atmosphere throughout Amphawan Temple is remarkably orderly, clean, and tranquil, even though many visitors and practitioners come daily. Most areas are intentionally designed to support meditation and mental stillness, creating an environment that naturally fosters concentration and inner calm.

One of the most important buildings is the Suthamma Bhavana Hall, a beautifully designed Thai-inspired structure that serves as the main venue for chanting, Dhamma talks, and meditation practice. The hall radiates a strong sense of faith and spiritual energy, allowing visitors to feel peaceful, grounded, and open to the teachings of the Buddha.

For those seeking inner tranquility or studying Buddhist art and religious architecture, Amphawan Temple also features an ordination hall and a bell tower that reflect the simplicity of the forest-temple development tradition. Various viewpoints within the temple convey themes of restraint, mindful living, and graceful detachment, making the site ideal for contemplative photography.

Amphawan Temple is therefore more than a religious attraction—it is a place of learning, practice, and spiritual healing. Visitors are warmly invited to experience true inner peace and discover teachings that elevate the quality of life at Amphawan Temple, a sanctuary where the light of Dhamma continues to shine in the hearts of the faithful.
