“Pay homage to the colossal image of the Buddha in the granting blessing posture, and enjoy the stunning panoramic scenery of Pattaya Bay from the hilltop.”
Wat Phra Yai, also known as Wat Phra Yai Khao Phra Tamnak (Big Buddha Temple on Pratumnak Hill), is one of the must-see religious sites when visiting Pattaya. The Buddha image enshrined on the hilltop is distinctive and revered by both Thais and foreigners. The Buddha image, in the granting blessing posture, is named "Phra Phuttha Sukhothai Walai Chonlathan" and stands at a height_ of 18 meters, making it the largest Buddha image in Chonburi province and a spiritual center for the community.
In addition to the Big Buddha image, the temple area also enshrines Buddha images corresponding to the days of the week, and features a terrace from which visitors can clearly view the scenery of Pattaya city and Jomtien Bay. It is believed that coming up to pay homage to the Big Buddha on this hill will bring auspiciousness to life, as well as allowing visitors to absorb the sacred and tranquil atmosphere, which contrasts with the hustle and bustle of Pattaya city below. This sacred site exemplifies the faith and beauty of Buddhist architecture.
Wat Phra Yai is open for visits and homage all year round, especially during the early morning or late afternoon/evening, which are the times when the weather is best and the light is most beautiful. The overall atmosphere within the temple is serene and cool. Visitors will experience ascending the beautiful Naga staircase to the Big Buddha courtyard, which feels like a pilgrimage journey. The sound of bells chiming periodically further enhances the sense of peace. A visit here is a perfect blend of pilgrimage and scenic sightseeing.
