Ko Fan (Big Buddha Island) was originally a small island separate from Samui. Locals used to build a wooden bridge, which later became a permanent stone dam connecting the island to the mainland. The Big Buddha Temple was built in 1972 to enshrine the Phra Phuttha Khodom in the Mara Vichai posture, over 12 meters tall, symbolizing faith and community protection.

The Big Buddha reflects shimmering golden light. Around the base is a wide terrace for circumambulation and viewing the Naga staircase, decorated with intricate Thai patterns. In addition, there are a Ubosot and small Viharn that house Buddha images in various postures.

At the foot of the hill is a panoramic viewpoint of Bang Rak Bay and Koh Phangan. Tourists enjoy souvenir shops, local handicrafts, and restaurants with a great atmosphere.

Ko Fan is an important landmark of Samui, a beautiful sunrise and sunset viewing point, and includes religious activities such as candlelight processions on important Buddhist holidays.

• Private car or motorcycle: Drive along the main road 4169 towards Bang Rak Beach, then turn onto road 4171 along the beach. You will find a junction leading directly to the road connecting Ko Fan.

• Come early at 08:30 – 10:00 AM or 5:30 PM for beautiful light and sunset views.

• Dress politely, covering shoulders and knees. Sarongs/wraps are available for rent.

• You must remove your shoes to go to the top level of the Buddha base. We recommend bringing socks.

• Buy quality coconut shell handicrafts at reasonable prices.
