“Stand at the highest point of the island to view over 45 giant wind turbines lined up against the horizon and the sea, with a panorama that stretches to the Pattaya coast and nearby islands.”
Windmill Viewpoint or what locals usually call Khao Nom Viewpoint, is a high-altitude area on the southern part of Koh Larn that was chosen as the site for the wind power electricity generation project because it is the best point to receive sea breezes all year round. The wind turbines lined up on the hilltop were not built only for tourism, but are an innovation for clean energy that converts wind into electricity for the community and resorts on the island, reducing pollution and maintaining the image of an eco-conservative island.
In terms of history and development, this area began as a strategic community site before developing into an important tourist attraction. In the past, Koh Larn faced severe electricity shortages. The installation of 45 wind turbines along with large solar panels was a major step toward energy self-sufficiency. This viewpoint is a testament to the progress and adaptation of the island community to modern technology while still preserving the surrounding nature very well.
The most attractive highlight is seeing Samae Beach and Nual Beach from a high Bird's Eye View. From here, you will see the beautiful crescent curves of the bays and the seawater grading from light shades to deep navy blue. Additionally, there is a walkway cut along the mountain ridge that connects to various points, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of the massive wind turbines closely amidst the sound of the wind blowing all the time.
Besides the wind turbines, this is the only spot on the island that can truly see a 360-degree view. Looking towards the east, you can clearly see Pattaya City and the Chonburi coastline. The importance of this viewpoint is not just beauty, but it is an area that reflects the lifestyle and resource management of the Koh Larn people who want to maintain the abundance of the Thai sea for sustainability.
Furthermore, the area at the base of the turbines is designed as a nature study trail that connects the mountain ecosystem with various viewpoints. Information boards are installed to provide knowledge about the working mechanism of wind turbines and the conversion of energy, which is considered an important outdoor learning source for youth and those interested in the environment.
