“A mysterious limestone island in the middle of the sea, clear water suitable for snorkeling, and local folklore that adds a unique charm”

Koh Phi is a small limestone island located off the coast of Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Although the island is uninhabited, it is well known for its striking appearance and eerie atmosphere, which gave rise to its memorable name. The island rises from the sea as a steep limestone formation, with a rugged surface and natural cavities shaped by waves and seawater over millions of years, clearly reflecting the power of nature.

The waters surrounding Koh Phi range from emerald green to clear blue, depending on sunlight and season. The underwater area remains rich in marine ecosystems, featuring submerged rock formations, shallow corals, and a variety of marine fish, making it ideal for snorkeling and boat sightseeing. Visitors will experience a strong sense of tranquility and untouched natural beauty, as the island has not yet been affected by mass tourism.

The name Koh Phi originates from local fishermen’s folklore passed down through generations. According to the stories, the island was once a nighttime resting point for fishing boats, and when moonlight reflected on the limestone cliffs, the shadows resembled ghostly figures, leading to the name “Ghost Island.” However, local belief holds that the island is not dangerous, but rather a natural place that deserves respect and reverence.

In some seasons, landing on the island may not be possible due to steep cliffs and sea conditions, but circling the island by boat still allows visitors to admire its complex limestone structures and capture unique photographs. Koh Phi is considered one of Khanom’s hidden gems, perfect for travelers who appreciate nature, serenity, and the raw charm of untouched destinations.
