“An ancient shrine housing the Thap Thim Goddess and Guan Yu Deity. Notable for its Hainanese Chinese architecture and a large number of nesting swallows. Located near the lively Shrine Market.”
Hainan Shrine Ban Don is an ancient shrine that plays a vital role as the spiritual center of the Hainanese Chinese community in Surat Thani Province. Located in the heart of the old commercial district, "Ban Don," it is the origin of the name "Shrine Market," which remains bustling to this day.
The building is distinguished by its traditional Hainanese Chinese architecture, decorated with red and gold tones, carved woodwork, and elaborate auspicious patterns. The interior provides a calm and solemn atmosphere, clearly contrasting with the hustle and bustle of the market outside. The Thap Thim Goddess (Mazu / Tianhou) is the presiding deity, a goddess who protects seafarers and is highly revered by fishermen. On the right is Guan Yu Deity (Guangdi) and on the left are the 108 Brothers Deities.
A significant feature that makes this shrine unique is the large number of swallows that nest inside the building, creating a striking and impressive sight. Locals believe they are a symbol of good fortune and abundance, and they also help generate income for the shrine.
In addition, this is the center for important festivals such as Chinese New Year and the Vegetarian Festival, during which beautiful red lanterns are hung throughout the area, allowing visitors to experience both the sacredness and the overseas Chinese culture up close.
